The Mission

The Millstone Mission aims to bring together lay Catholics struggling to reconcile their faith in the institutional Church with the painful revelations brought to light by the clergy abuse crisis.

Monthly support groups provide an outlet for honest, authentic communication with other lay Catholics in an environment of trust and confidentiality without fear of judgment.

The Millstone Mission also provides lay Catholics with various opportunities to support survivors of clergy abuse and their loved ones who continue to struggle to overcome the toll the abuse has taken on their lives.

Missionaries can serve as sponsors in providing emotional support to individual survivors.

Missionaries can provide spiritual support through individual personal prayer devotions and prayer groups.

Missionaries can donate resources and services such as support groups, professional counselling, career assistance, and housing.

The Millstone Mission gives voice to individual lay Catholics by communicating on their behalf to Church leadership of all levels – – from local parishes and dioceses to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) up to and including the Vatican.

Through these communications, Missionaries are empowered to be active participants in the Church by expressing:

-their opinions on current Church happenings, practices and policies relating to the Church’s response to the clergy abuse crisis;

-concerns arising from actions that disenfranchise the laity;

-suggestions on how to expand the involvement of the laity in local parishes and dioceses and ways to empower the laity to make meaningful contributions to decisions made by the institutional Church;

objections to the continuation of any practices which perpetuate a culture of clericalism; and

ways to strengthen and revive the Church to ensure a future which returns the faithful and expands Catholicism throughout the world.
